		<description>When we begin discussing the K-8 setting for middle school age children, we as educators must be willing to consider ways middle school children can be empowered to work with former teachers, younger children and take on leadership roles within the K-8 community. Research suggests that young people who remain in a K-8 setting, as opposed to moving into a 6-8 school, perform better, have higher self-concepts, and adjust easier to adolescents. This makes perfect sense when you think about the value of growing up in a nurturing, inclusive environment. As educators we must do a better job promoting middle school concepts within a K-8 setting starting with &quot;teaming&quot; and moving to interdisciplinary instruction, advisory, and programs that connect the expertise of guidance counselors and community support that engages middle school age students in valuable experiences that promote leadership and social/emotional development. We cannot sit back and imagine that middle school children are not different than their younger siblings; they are different. They (students) have needs to be actively engaged and to belong to a community that supports and encourages academic support and an esprit de corp. Last year I spent the year teaching 6th grade in an inner-city K-8 school.
